Concert by Hazolahy Thominot, followed by a live performance! Hazolahy Thominot, nicknamed the “King of Mangaliba” in Madagascar, carries with him the heritage of traditional music from the south of The Big Island. He invites us to enter the musical world of the celebrations of the Antanosy ethnic groups, drawing on the repertoires of trance music from the south. Hazolahy Thominot is also one of the few people still practising Sarandra, an improvised vocal art that puts into words and sounds the connection to the other world. An acknowledged virtuoso on the kabosy (read “kabos”, a small square guitar from the high plateaux of Madagascar), he plays a double, custom-made model that adds the range of a bass kabosy to the traditional kabosy. The sound is reminiscent of the guembri, and recalls the influence of Arab culture on a number of social groups in southern Madagascar.
