A masterpiece of 12th-century Romanesque art, listed by UNESCO as part of the World Heritage Route of the Pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela, La Sauve-Majeure Abbey stands as a magnificent testament to religious architecture that has endured through the centuries. It unfolds across an open-air landscape spanning over two hectares and features beautifully carved decorations: mythical creatures, heroes and biblical stories are depicted on the capitals of the church and the chevet. Open from October to May, Tuesday to Sunday from 10.30 am to 1 pm and from 2 pm to 5.30 pm (and therefore closed on Mondays). From June to September, open Monday to Sunday (inclusive) from 10 am to 1.15 pm and from 2 pm to 6 pm. Please note: last admission to the monument is 45 minutes before closing time. Closed on 1 January, 1 May and 25 December.
