Conférences au Château de Mongenan : Jardins initiatiques et cathédrales de la nature to Portets
Le 11/05/2025Languages spoken
In two books, “Au jardin de Jean-Jacques Rousseau” (published by Mengès) and “Les derniers feux du plaisir” (published by Robert Laffont), Florence Mothe recounts the intimate relationship between gardening and the philosopher Jean-Jacques Rousseau, whose precious herbariums Mongenan presents.
A lover of periwinkle, red clover, daisies and genepi, Rousseau claimed with a straight face that “the humble couch grass of our paths is as precious to the botanist as the most beautiful orchid in China”. He was an original gardener who read while spading, having placed a book on the handle of his spade, but his ecological ideas were so convincing that he profoundly changed the aesthetics of gardens in the 18th century.
