Lecture: Astronomy in the tables of the year 1000 to Pujols-sur-ciron
Le 22/04/2026The example of the chapter register of Saint-Emilion.
Presented by Jean-Paul Parisot, astronomer at the Besançon Observatory and subsequently professor of astronomy at the University of Bordeaux.
Very recently, as part of an exhibition at the Departmental Archives, historians from the University of Bordeaux Montaigne discovered, in a 12th-century manuscript (the oldest written record from St-Emilion), an astronomical table bound (accidentally?) in the 16th century, with no connection to it. Consisting of 59 rows and 19 columns, it undoubtedly features a lunar signature. It comprises letters from three Latin alphabets, consisting of standard letters and punctuated letters (with a dot to the right or left); it turns out to be the only medieval table bearing these letters, which will facilitate its identification.
