The next three months will be devoted to the contribution of the various provincial academies to the intellectual multiplicity of the Age of Enlightenment. Florence Mothe has just published a book entitled “Savoirs et franc maçonnerie au siècle des lumières” (Knowledge and Freemasonry in the Age of Enlightenment).
One might think that this movement affected only a few Parisian beaux esprits. This was not the case. This appetite spread like a river of lava to all the cities of the kingdom, where all the literati were keen to do as well “as the forty who sometimes had as much spirit as four”. The first lecture, given at the Château de Mongenan in Portets on Sunday 28 September at 5pm, will be dedicated to Montesquieu, who can be considered the father of this movement in the form of a cataclysm, both in his role as director of the Académie des Sciences…
