It details electoral alliances, political funding and corruption pacts, to the extent that on two occasions,
mafia members came very close to entering government. Enriched by Prohibition, the Italian-American Cosa Nostra realised that money opens doors. By taking control of the trade unions, it controlled both the votes and the election campaign funds. An immutable rule: once in power, presidents have more to lose than to gain by honouring their debts.
