Theatre: In the Absence of Victor Hugo to Podensac

The Podensac Municipal Culture Committee, in partnership with the IDDAC (Gironde Departmental Cultural Agency), invites the public to come and see the play ‘En l’absence de Victor Hugo’, performed by the Compagnie Imagine, on Saturday 7 November 2026 at 8.30 pm at the Salle du Sporting.

The Plot: In the shadow of a giant

May 1885. Dr Valentin Magnan welcomes a new patient: Adèle Hugo. She is said to be ‘mad’.

A feminist ahead of her time, a lover of freedom – she certainly was, like so many other women committed to asylums at that time for the very same reasons. But was she really mad? The play plunges the audience into the heart of the captivating conversations between the psychiatrist and his patient. Amidst hypnosis sessions, innovative therapies of the time and moments of escape at the piano, Adèle opens up completely: her turbulent life, her quest for absolute love.
