Terra Aventura: More than one trick up your sleeve to Bazas
Languages spoken
A long, long time ago, in the 1st century AD, a woman from Bazas set out to visit Jerusalem… “La Matrone”, as she was known to the locals, witnessed the execution of Saint John the Baptist, whose head was cut off… Legend has it that she managed to contain a few drops of his blood in a silver conch shell.
How do you say, Zellé? A soft-boiled egg?
A ‘conch’, old Zacquet… It’s a shell-shaped container! Back in Bazas, La Matrone had a small oratory built to house the relic of John the Baptist, who became the town’s patron saint for the occasion.
The oratory soon became a cathedral… Over the centuries, it was rebuilt and enlarged to form this magnificent monument!
