Barsac, a former 13th-century royal provostship, is known throughout the world for its sweet wine, Sauternes. This village in southern Gironde enjoyed a period of intense activity between the 18th and 19th centuries, with its port situated at the mouth of the River Ciron. At the heart of the village, the splendid Church of Saint-Vincent overlooks the vineyards and their many classified growths.
