Matisse, theorist? by Isabelle Beccia, from the Bordeaux Museum of Fine Arts. Painter, sculptor, draughtsman and engraver, Henri Matisse, this eternal innovator, never ceased to question his art throughout his career, constantly reinventing himself.

For him, “the importance of an artist is measured by the number of new signs he has introduced into the language of art”. Trained in the studio of Gustave Moreau, whose influence was decisive, particularly in his way of “thinking” about painting and striving for simplification, he experimented, researched and reflected on his practice.
