Obscoena in Gironde Romanesque art. Art of mortality or hidden eroticism … ? By Didier Coquillas-Sistach, PhD in History from the University of Bordeaux, palaeo-environmentalist, lecturer, scientific mediator for Terre et Océan.

“Feminine and masculine figures and couples in positions that could be described as obscene (more or less crude exhibition of sexual organs, mating, etc.) are images that are, to say the least, unexpected on medieval Christian buildings dedicated to worship.

It is perhaps worth pointing out that, at the time, the sacred and the profane coexisted to some extent in the church, which was the village meeting place. This would explain the specific characteristics – profane and sacred – of the iconographic themes of the religious heritage of the period.

So what could be the meaning of these images of a licentious nature?
