Château La Garde to Martillac
Length of visit : 60 minutesLanguages spoken
The “Lagarde” estate already features on the first general map of the Kingdom of France, drawn up in 1756 by Cassini. The beautiful charterhouse, built in 1732, was mainly surrounded by valleys and woods. Winegrowing really took off on the estate when it was bought by the Lacoste family – Bordeaux wine merchants – in 1877. The vineyards spread over the magnificent gravelly hilltops and plateaux, and an imposing winery was built next to the Carthusian monastery in 1881.
After the First World War, Louis Eschenauer, a renowned wine merchant from the Chartrons, took an interest in Domaine de La Garde, which he bought in 1920.
Sometimes called Domaine de La Garde, Clos de La Garde, then Château La Garde, from this period onwards the estate’s labels bear the coat of arms inspired by the lion-headed leopard attributed to Aquitaine since the Hundred Years’ War.
